Dunstable Town Council and Dunstable in Bloom are delighted to announce that we have won Category Winner and a Gold award in the Large Town Category at this year’s Britain in Bloom competition! We also received the Sustainable Gardening award for the rain gardens planted in the town center by Central Bedfordshire Council.
On Friday 29 July, Britain in Bloom judges Ann Holland and Geraldine King visited Dunstable, and were taken on a three hour tour of the town that showcased our best green spaces, planting and local initiatives and community groups.
About Britain in Bloom
Following a two-year hiatus, we’re thrilled to see Britain in Bloom UK Finals return for 2022 with 46 community gardening groups looking to wow judges this summer. This year, finalists will be judged according to strengthened environmental criteria that will help them to consider sustainability issues and implement planet-friendly gardening techniques within their community projects. Many of this year’s finalists have been shaped by the pandemic and a growing interest in bringing people together through gardening.
Tour of Dunstable with the judges
The judges were taken on a three hour tour of Dunstable, guided by Hugh Garrod, Chairman of Dunstable in Bloom, and John Crawley, Head of Grounds and Environmental Services at Dunstable Town Council. Along the way, they met with businesses, volunteers and community groups.

Britain in Bloom Portfolio
Entrants into Britain in Bloom prepare a portfolio every year to present to the judges. This showcases the town under certain criteria, and is a chance for judges to see initiatives or locations that may not be on the tour. This portfolio was created by Dunstable in Bloom in collaboration with Dunstable Town Council’s Grounds and Environmental Services team.
Dunstable in Bloom Video
At the beginning of the tour, judges are given the opportunity to view a short video made by the entering town. This is a great way to showcase the towns green and open spaces, and show footage form local events. This video was created entirely by Dunstable in Bloom volunteers.
