Wooden Sculpture Trail: Celebrating Dunstable’s History
Explore six sculptures that highlight key historical themes, people, and events that have played an important role in shaping Dunstable. These sculptures have been thoughtfully placed around the town to create a historical trail, titled “Carving a Journey Through Dunstable”.
The sculpture project was originally part of Dunstable High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) community engagement strand and the idea behind the sculptures was to leave a legacy from the HSHAZ scheme celebrating Dunstable’s history.
In May 2021 members of the public were given the opportunity to get involved via social media and vote for possible themes for the sculptures. Many residents were involved in the consultation and attending the events where the sculptures were created. Commissioned sculptor Peter Leadbeater created five of the sculptures with live chainsaw demonstrations at Town Council events during the HSHAZ between April 2020 and March 2024. The final sculpture was created in April 2024.
Each sculpture is crafted entirely from English oak, and were created using wood sourced from various locations, including Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, and a golf course near Southampton as part of general land management.
The sculptures are artistic installations designed to raise interest and give something to think and talk about, rather than being detailed or accurate representations.
By following the trail, you’ll not only see these beautiful works of art, but also learn about the people, industries, and moments that have left a lasting impact on the town.
